Miami in August: Weather, Prices and Hurricane Risk (2027)

10 min read

Miami in August averages a daytime high of about 32°C (90°F) and a night-time low of about 26°C, according to NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Miami International Airport. August is a good month to go if you want a bath-warm sea, low hotel rates and cheap set-menu dinners, and a bad one if afternoon thunderstorms and the start of peak hurricane season would spoil the trip for you.

That's the whole trade. Coming from an Amsterdam August of 22°C and the odd shower, Miami feels like walking into a sauna. Plan your days around the heat and it's one of the most underrated months on the calendar.

How hot and wet is Miami in August?

Miami in August is hot, humid and wet, with typical highs of 31 to 33°C and lows of 25 to 26°C, according to NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Miami International Airport. The humidity is what catches people out. The heat index, which the US National Weather Service defines as the "feels like" temperature combining air temperature and humidity, regularly sits well above the actual reading on August afternoons.

August is one of Miami's wettest months, with roughly 200 to 250 mm of rain in a normal year, according to NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. It rarely rains all day, though. The usual rhythm is a clear, sticky morning, clouds piling up after lunch, a loud thunderstorm somewhere between 2 pm and 6 pm, then a steamy, pleasant evening.

The Atlantic off Miami Beach is typically 29 to 31°C in August, among the warmest sea temperatures of the year in NOAA's coastal water temperature records. Daylight runs to about 13 hours, with sunrise around 7 am and sunset around 8 pm early in the month. Miami is on Eastern Daylight Time, six hours behind Amsterdam.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and activity peaks between mid-August and mid-October, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. A named storm is a tropical storm or hurricane that the National Hurricane Center has named because its sustained winds reached at least 63 km/h (39 mph). Most Augusts pass without one hitting Miami, but you are travelling in the window where the odds start to climb.

What to pack for Miami in August

Pack for heat and sudden rain, then add one warm layer. Linen and loose cotton beat anything synthetic, and sandals that can get soaked beat trainers. Bring a compact umbrella, a hat and high-factor sunscreen (you can also buy it cheaply at any CVS or Walgreens).

The warm layer is not a joke. Restaurants, cinemas, malls and buses run their air conditioning hard enough that a light cardigan earns its place. Add insect repellent and a US plug adapter (Type A or B, 120 volts).

What's on in Miami in August, and what does it cost?

August is low season in Miami, so hotel rates are among the lowest of the year while heat, rain and hurricane risk keep many North American visitors away. Miami Beach still fills up at weekends with Floridians on short breaks, so weekday nights are where the real deals sit. For a sense of what a first stay costs, see our hotel prices for a first stay.

Fares for Amsterdam to Miami are not tracked by miamiamsterdam.com yet, so we have no August figure to give you, and we won't guess one. What we can say is how the calendar works: the Dutch school summer holiday (zomervakantie) is staggered by region (north, middle and south) across July and August, so outbound flights in July and early August and return flights at the end of August are usually the busiest. The exact 2027 dates are published on Rijksoverheid.nl. Once we start tracking this route, the fare calendar on our flights page will show the cheapest month and day in both directions.

The annual fixtures worth planning around:

  • Miami Spice: the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau's restaurant programme, typically running through August and September, with three-course prix-fixe lunch, brunch and dinner menus at set prices in hundreds of restaurants. Prices and the participating list are announced each summer on miamiandbeaches.com.
  • Miami Spa Months: the same bureau's discounted spa programme, usually running from July to September. Check the current list on miamiandbeaches.com.
  • Sport: the Miami Marlins play their MLB regular season at loanDepot park in Little Havana, the Miami Dolphins usually play NFL preseason games at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens in August, and Inter Miami's MLS season is under way (check the schedule, as summer tournaments sometimes interrupt it).
  • Back-to-school sales tax holiday: Florida has run a sales tax holiday in August in recent years on clothing, shoes and school supplies under set price caps. Check floridarevenue.com, the Florida Department of Revenue's site, for the 2027 dates and items.

There are no US federal public holidays in August. Labor Day falls on Monday 6 September 2027, so if your trip runs into early September, expect a busy, pricier holiday weekend. Miami-Dade County Public Schools usually go back in mid-August, which thins out local families at attractions on weekdays.

How do you plan an August trip to Miami from Amsterdam?

You plan an August trip to Miami in six steps: authorisation, flights, insurance, a base, a storm-proof daily rhythm and arrival logistics.

1. Apply for an ESTA. The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is the online approval Dutch passport holders need to visit the US under the Visa Waiver Program for stays of up to 90 days. US Customs and Border Protection recommends applying at least 72 hours before departure, and an approved ESTA is generally valid for two years. Apply only on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov: the fee rose in 2025, the official site shows the current amount, and lookalike sites charge extra.

2. Book flights around the holiday crunch. KLM flies Amsterdam Schiphol to Miami nonstop (check klm.com for 2027 frequencies), and one-stop options run via hubs such as Atlanta, New York, London and Paris. Fort Lauderdale (FLL), about 40 km north, is worth checking as an alternative arrival airport. You can search Amsterdam to Miami flights and compare a mid-week departure against the weekends either side of your region's school holiday.

3. Insure before a storm has a name. Buy travel insurance (reisverzekering) with cancellation cover (annuleringsverzekering) when you book, not when the forecast turns. Many policies treat a storm that has already been named as a known event and won't pay out for it.

4. Pick your base. South Beach is the walkable option, with Art Deco hotels on Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue and the beach a block away. Mid-Beach is quieter, Brickell suits a city break with rooftop bars and the Metrorail, and Coconut Grove is the leafy, shaded pick. For a first trip in August, compare hotels in South Beach on weekday nights, since being able to walk to the sea before the heat builds matters more this month than any other.

5. Build your days around the storm clock. Do outdoor things before noon, put museums and long lunches in the 2 pm to 6 pm storm window, and go back out for dinner. Good afternoon shelters include the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) on Biscayne Bay, The Bass in Miami Beach and the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science.

6. Sort your phone and transport on arrival. From Miami International Airport, the Metrorail Orange Line runs downtown, and rideshare or taxis cover Miami Beach. A travel eSIM for data on arrival saves you hunting for Wi-Fi when you need maps and a ride in the arrivals hall.

Four things that are best in August, and one to skip

Swim at 8 am. The sea is at its warmest and calmest-feeling first thing, and the beaches are quiet. Crandon Park on Key Biscayne and South Pointe Park at the southern tip of Miami Beach are the two we'd pick.

Walk the Art Deco District early. Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue look their best in soft morning light, before the heat makes walking miserable. If you want the backstory, tours and things to do in Miami include self-guided and guided walks of the district.

Eat your way through Miami Spice. This is the single best reason to come in August. Places that are hard to justify at full price become set-menu bargains, and dinner is exactly where you want to be after the afternoon storm.

Drive the Overseas Highway. Leave at 7 am, head for Key Largo or Islamorada, snorkel or eat fish by the water, and get back before the evening storms. You'll want a car for it, so book car hire in Miami for just the day or two you need rather than the whole trip.

Skip: the Everglades on foot. August is the wet season, with standing water, intense mosquitoes and serious heat on the trails. A short airboat ride early in the day is fine; save the hiking for a winter trip.

What mistakes do people make in Miami in August?

The biggest mistake people make in Miami in August is planning the beach for the afternoon, exactly when thunderstorms roll in. Lightning on an open beach is a real risk, and lifeguards clear the water when it's close. The National Weather Service's advice is short: when thunder roars, go indoors.

Underestimating the sun is the second. The UV index in a Miami August is far beyond anything a Dutch summer throws at you, and a burn on day one ruins day two. Reapply sunscreen after every swim and drink more water than feels sensible.

Sargassum, a brown floating seaweed, washes up on South Florida beaches in spring and summer and can smell when it rots. It comes and goes by the day, so check conditions in the morning and switch beaches if needed; Key Biscayne and Miami Beach are often affected differently.

Heavy downpours flood low streets in Miami Beach and Brickell for an hour or two. Don't drive or wade through standing water, and give yourself extra time for airport transfers on stormy afternoons.

The bill catches out a lot of Europeans. Many Miami Beach hotels add a nightly resort fee on top of the room rate, and many restaurants add an automatic service charge, so read the bill before you tip on top of it. Prices in shops and on menus are shown before sales tax, which is added at the till.

Finally, people book non-refundable everything in hurricane season. If you do, at least make the flights changeable or the insurance solid, and keep an eye on the National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov) in the week before you leave.

How does Miami in August compare with Amsterdam in August?

Miami in August is about 10°C warmer than Amsterdam by day, roughly three times as wet and in its low season, while Amsterdam is in peak season. The figures below are rounded climate normals (NOAA 1991 to 2020 for Miami, KNMI 1991 to 2020 for De Bilt near Amsterdam), not forecasts.

Is August a good month to visit Miami?

Yes, August is a good month to visit Miami if you treat it as a morning-and-evening city and come for the sea, the food and the low hotel rates. Go if you like heat, want Miami Spice and can keep your plans flexible. Don't go if you need guaranteed sunshine all afternoon or a trip that can't move if a storm is named. Book a mid-week flight away from your region's school holiday peak, insure on the day you book, and stay somewhere you can walk to the beach at 8 am.
