Miami in October: Weather, Events and Whether to Go
Miami in October gives you sea water in the high 20s °C and hotel rates well below winter levels, while holding out for December gets you drier, cooler air at holiday prices with Art Basel crowds on top. For most people flying from Amsterdam, the second half of October wins. The rainy season has officially ended, the Atlantic is still warm enough to float in for an hour, and the main thing you need to respect is the tail end of hurricane season.
If you're planning for October 2027, this is the month to book early for flights and late for nothing: keep everything flexible and you'll get a warm, quieter Miami before the snowbirds arrive.
How hot and wet is Miami in October?
Miami in October typically sees daytime highs of about 29 to 31°C and night lows of about 23 to 25°C, according to NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Miami International Airport. Coming from a Dutch autumn, that's summer. Humidity stays high for most of the month and eases noticeably in the last week or two.
The South Florida rainy season runs from 15 May to 15 October, according to the National Weather Service office in Miami. In practice, early October still brings heavy afternoon downpours that flood streets for an hour and then clear, while late October is drier and sunnier. Total October rainfall is still among the higher months of the year, so don't plan an outdoor-only trip in the first week.
The sea is the best part. The Atlantic off Miami Beach usually sits in the high 20s °C through October, warmer than the North Sea gets on its best August day. Daylight runs at roughly 11 to 12 hours, with sunset around 19:15 at the start of the month and closer to 18:50 by the end (before US clocks change in early November).
What to pack:
- Light, breathable clothes in linen or cotton, plus one long layer, because Miami air conditioning is set to arctic.
- A compact umbrella or packable rain jacket for the afternoon storms.
- Sandals or shoes you don't mind getting wet, since flooded kerbs are normal after a cloudburst.
- High-factor sunscreen and a hat. The October sun burns pale Dutch skin in under 30 minutes.
- Insect repellent, especially if you're heading to the Everglades.
What does an October trip from Amsterdam cost?
October fares between Amsterdam and Miami are not tracked by miamiamsterdam.com yet, so we have no October figure to give you, and you should treat any number you see quoted as a snapshot rather than a norm. Once the data is in, it will appear on our Amsterdam to Miami fare calendar, with the underlying figures in the fares dataset.
What we can say qualitatively: October sits outside both the Dutch summer peak and the Christmas rush, so it's usually a reasonable month to fly. The exception is the herfstvakantie, the Dutch school autumn break, which pushes up fares out of Schiphol for the weeks it covers. KLM flies nonstop from Schiphol to Miami International, and you'll also find one-stop options through US hubs or other European airports. You can search Amsterdam to Miami flights for the second half of October and compare the nonstop against connections.
Hotels follow the same pattern. October is low to shoulder season in Miami, so room rates are generally well below what the same hotel charges between December and March. Watch the extras: many Miami Beach hotels add a nightly resort fee plus local taxes on top of the headline rate.
For entry, Dutch passport holders travel under the Visa Waiver Program and need an ESTA. ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is the online pre-approval that lets Visa Waiver nationals visit the US for up to 90 days without a visa. US Customs and Border Protection raised the ESTA fee to USD 40 in 2025, according to CBP; confirm the current fee on the official esta.cbp.dhs.gov site and ignore lookalike agencies that charge more.
If you're putting euros aside for next October, bunq's Savings Account paid a base rate of 1.51% a year and Rabobank's Rabo SpaarRekening paid 1.50% a year on the first EUR 10,000 in October 2026, according to the miamiamsterdam.com savings rate tracker. ING's Oranje Spaarrekening and ABN AMRO's Direct Sparen both paid 1.25% a year in the same check. Rates move often, so confirm with the bank; the full comparison sits on our cost of living and savings rates page.
What's on in Miami in October?
October in Miami is a month of season openers rather than big-ticket festivals. These recur every year:
- Columbus Day (also observed as Indigenous Peoples' Day): a US federal holiday on the second Monday of October, which is 11 October in 2027. Banks and government offices close; beaches get busier for the long weekend.
- Miami Carnival: the Caribbean carnival at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds, usually held around Columbus Day weekend, with a parade of costumed bands and soca. Exact dates shift, so check the organisers' site before you book.
- Stone crab season: opens on 15 October, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and Miami's seafood restaurants build their autumn menus around it.
- Miami Heat: the NBA regular season starts in late October at the Kaseya Center downtown. The Miami Dolphins play NFL home games at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens through the autumn.
- Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show: usually late October or early November, about 45 minutes north. It fills hotels in Broward County, which matters if you're staying up there.
- Halloween: 31 October. South Beach and Lincoln Road turn into an evening costume parade.
On the Dutch side, the herfstvakantie is staggered by region (noord, midden and zuid) across mid to late October. Rijksoverheid publishes the dates per region on rijksoverheid.nl several years ahead, so check yours before you pick travel days.
What's actually worth doing in October, and what should you skip?
Eat stone crab after 15 October. The claws are served chilled with mustard sauce, and Joe's Stone Crab in South of Fifth is the classic, if crowded, choice. South of Fifth is also a good base: quieter than central South Beach and walking distance from the beach at South Pointe Park, so look at hotels around South Beach if you want to be near it.
Go to a Heat game or the Carnival, depending on your dates. A late-October Heat home game is the easiest big night out in town, and the Carnival is the one October event with a proper festival feel.
Do the Everglades early in the morning. Shark Valley in Everglades National Park has a tram tour and a flat bike loop where you'll see alligators at close range, and mornings beat the afternoon storms and the heat. If you'd rather have someone else drive, you can compare Everglades airboat and day tours.
Snorkel in Key Largo on a calm late-October day. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is roughly 90 minutes south by car, and warm, clear water makes October one of the better months for it.
Skip the restaurants along the Ocean Drive strip. The oversized cocktails and "specials" come with surprise prices and automatic service charges, and the food is better two blocks inland.
How does Miami in October compare with December and with Amsterdam?
Miami in October is warmer, wetter and cheaper than Miami in December, and about 15°C warmer than Amsterdam in the same month. The figures below are approximate climate norms, not forecasts.
| Measure (unit) | Miami, October | Miami, December | Amsterdam, October |

How do you plan an October trip from Amsterdam?
Planning an October trip to Miami takes six steps, and the order matters because of insurance and school holidays.
- Pick your dates. Aim for the second half of October, and check whether your travel days overlap with a herfstvakantie region, which raises fares.
- Apply for your ESTA. Do it on the official CBP site at least 72 hours before departure. An approved ESTA is generally valid for two years or until your passport expires.
- Book a changeable flight. In hurricane season, a fare you can move for a modest fee is worth more than the cheapest non-changeable ticket.
- Buy travel insurance straight away. Most policies won't cover a storm once it has been named, so buy cover the day you book, not the week you fly.
- Sort data before landing. A travel eSIM for the US set up at home means you can call a ride from Miami International without hunting for airport wifi.
- Book where you'll sleep. South Beach for the beach, Brickell or downtown for city life and the Heat, Coconut Grove for something calmer and leafier.
- Add a car only for day trips. You don't need one in Miami Beach, but for Key Largo or the Everglades, car hire in Miami for a day or two is cheaper and easier than a week-long rental plus hotel parking.
What catches people out in October?
The biggest mistake is treating hurricane season as something that ended in September. October storms tend to form in the western Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, and Hurricane Wilma hit South Florida on 24 October 2005. Check the National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov) in the week before you fly, and don't panic over a distant system; the centre's forecast cone tells you more than the headlines.
The clock change catches people too. The Netherlands moves to winter time on the last Sunday of October (31 October in 2027), while the US changes on the first Sunday of November (7 November in 2027). For that week the time difference shrinks from 6 hours to 5, which can wreck a booked call or a tight connection.
King tides are the October surprise nobody packs for. These are the highest tides of the year, peaking in autumn, and they push seawater up through storm drains in low parts of Miami Beach such as West Avenue and Sunset Harbour on perfectly sunny days. Walk around the puddles, and don't park in them.
Then there's money. Tipping 18 to 22% at restaurants is normal in Miami, many places already add a service charge (read the bill before you tip twice), and hotel resort fees are rarely in the first price you see. Budget for all three.
Finally, don't assume "dry season" starts on 1 October. The first half of the month can be as stormy as September; book beach days and boat trips for the back half.
So, should you go to Miami in October?
Yes, if you can travel from around 15 October onwards and keep your bookings flexible. You get warm sea, lower hotel rates and stone crab season, and you avoid the December price jump. If hurricane risk would ruin the trip for you, wait a few weeks: our guide to Miami in November covers the drier, less humid month that follows.
