Miami in December 2026: Weather, Events and Prices

8 min read

You're in Amsterdam, it's dark before five, and you're eyeing Miami for December. Go: December is the start of Miami's dry season, with average highs around 25°C, lows around 17°C and a sea still warm enough to swim, according to NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Miami International Airport.

The catch is timing. Art Basel week in early December and the stretch from Christmas to New Year are the two most expensive slices of the month, and the Dutch Christmas school holiday pushes Schiphol departures up from 19 December. Pick your week well and you get Miami at its most comfortable without paying the full holiday premium.

Check the December numbers

Miami in December is warm, dry and comfortable, with about three hours more daylight than Amsterdam. Here's the month on paper.

  • Air temperature: Miami's average December high is about 25°C (77°F) and the average low about 17°C (63°F), according to NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals. Every so often a cold front pushes through and nights dip toward 10°C for a day or two.
  • Sea: The Atlantic off Miami Beach averages roughly 24°C in December, according to NOAA's coastal water temperature guide. Cool by Caribbean standards, bathwater by North Sea ones.
  • Rain: December is one of Miami's driest months, with roughly 50 to 60 mm of rain on average in NOAA's normals, mostly in short showers rather than grey all-day drizzle.
  • Daylight: Miami gets about 10.5 hours of daylight around the winter solstice on 21 December, against about 7.5 hours in Amsterdam. The sun sets around 17:30 local time.
  • Hurricanes: The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on 30 November, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center, so December storms are rare.
  • Time difference: Miami runs on Eastern Standard Time in December, six hours behind Amsterdam.

On prices, the site has nothing measured for December yet. December fares between Amsterdam and Miami are not tracked by miamiamsterdam.com yet, so the Amsterdam and Miami fare calendar has no December figure to quote, and anyone promising you a firm December price is guessing. The pattern itself is reliable: Miami's winter high season runs roughly December to April, and hotel rates climb through the month, peaking over Art Basel week and between Christmas and New Year.

If your trip fund is sitting in a Dutch savings account, it won't do much heavy lifting before December. bunq's Savings Account paid a base rate of 1.51% a year in October 2026, according to the miamiamsterdam.com savings rate tracker, with Rabobank's Rabo SpaarRekening at 1.50% on the first EUR 10,000 and both ING's Oranje Spaarrekening and ABN AMRO's Direct Sparen at 1.25%. The full table, read weekly from each bank's own rate page, sits on our cost of living and savings rates page; rates move often, so confirm with the bank.

Plan your December trip in six steps

The order matters here, because December dates sell out in a predictable sequence. Work through it now, at the end of October.

1. Pick your week around the calendar

December in Miami has a fixed rhythm of annual events, and each one moves prices.

  • Art Basel Miami Beach, the international contemporary art fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center, runs every year in the first week or so of December. Dozens of satellite fairs and parties across Wynwood and the Design District make up what locals call Miami Art Week. Exact 2026 dates are on artbasel.com.
  • Christmas Day (25 December) is a US federal holiday, and many shops, museums and some restaurants close.
  • The Orange Bowl, a college football bowl game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, is played around New Year. The date depends on each season's College Football Playoff schedule, so check orangebowl.org.
  • New Year's Eve brings a big annual fireworks show at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami, and 1 January is a federal holiday.
  • Dutch kerstvakantie: according to Rijksoverheid, the 2026/27 Christmas school holiday runs from 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 in all three Dutch regions.

The sweet spot is the second week of December: after Art Basel packs up and before Dutch families fly out on 19 December.

2. Apply for your ESTA

The ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is the online permission Dutch passport holders need to visit the US without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program, for stays of up to 90 days. Apply only on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, and do it at least 72 hours before departure, as US Customs and Border Protection recommends. An approved ESTA lasts two years or until your passport expires. The fee has changed recently, so read it off the CBP site rather than an old blog post, and see our short answers on corridor entry rules for the basics.

3. Book flights before the holiday rush

If you're flying on 19 or 20 December, book now; those seats go to families first. Miami International (MIA) is the obvious airport, but Fort Lauderdale (FLL), about 45 minutes north, is worth checking too. Nonstop flights from Schiphol take roughly ten hours westbound when they run, and one-stop routings through US or European hubs fill the gaps. You can compare Amsterdam to Miami flights across both airports and flex a day either side.

4. Choose your base

Where you sleep shapes the trip more than which hotel you pick. South Beach is walkable and right on the sand, but it's the priciest area during Art Basel. Mid-Beach and North Beach are calmer and often cheaper for the same beach. Brickell is downtown towers and rooftop bars, with the free Metromover. Coconut Grove is leafy, bayfront and low-key, a good pick if you want quiet evenings.

My pick for a December week is Coconut Grove for sleep plus day trips to the beach, or Mid-Beach if swimming is the whole point. Rates jump closer to the holidays, so look at hotels in Coconut Grove as soon as your flights are fixed, and check whether the price includes tax and the resort fee.

5. Pack for two climates

You leave a 7°C Schiphol and land in shorts weather. Wear your coat to the airport and stuff it in a carry-on. For Miami, pack swimwear, light layers, a fleece or light jacket for cold front evenings and fierce air conditioning, sunscreen (the December sun still burns), sunglasses, sandals plus closed shoes, and one smarter outfit for dinner. US sockets take type A and B plugs, so bring an adapter.

6. Get data before you land

Install a travel eSIM at home on wifi and switch it on when you land, so you can order a ride from MIA without hunting for airport wifi. Setting up a travel eSIM for the US takes a few minutes and saves you a roaming surprise.

Spend your days on these, and skip one

These are the things December does better than any other month in Miami.

Go to the Everglades. December is the start of the dry season in Everglades National Park, according to the US National Park Service, when falling water levels concentrate alligators and wading birds and the mosquitoes ease off. The Shark Valley tram and the Anhinga Trail are the easy wins, or you can book an Everglades tour from Miami and skip the driving.

Eat stone crab. Florida stone crab season runs from 15 October to 1 May, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, so December is prime. Joe's Stone Crab in South Beach is the classic; expect a queue.

Drive the Overseas Highway. The road to the Florida Keys is at its best in dry, clear December weather. Key Largo works as a half day; Key West is a long full day. If you only need wheels for this, hire a car for the day rather than the whole week.

Catch Art Week without a ticket. Even if you skip the main fair, the Wynwood Walls, Design District installations and galleries open late during Miami Art Week.

Skip Ocean Drive's sidewalk restaurants. The giant cocktails and touts waving menus come with high prices and service charges added to the bill. Walk a block inland to Washington Avenue or Collins Avenue.

Avoid the classic December mistakes

Most December trips go wrong on packing, dates or the bill. The usual traps:

  • Packing only for heat. Cold fronts are real, and 15°C at night on a breezy terrace feels colder than it sounds.
  • Landing on Art Basel week by accident. Miami Beach rates spike and some hotels set minimum stays. Check artbasel.com before you book anything on the beach.
  • Leaving holiday flights late. Departures around 19 December fill early because of kerstvakantie.
  • Using a lookalike ESTA site. Third-party sites charge extra for the same form. The only official address ends in cbp.dhs.gov.
  • Skipping travel insurance. The Dutch basisverzekering (mandatory basic health insurance) covers emergency care abroad only up to Dutch rates, and US hospital bills run far above them. Take a travel policy with medical cover.
  • Renting a car for a beach stay. Parking on Miami Beach is expensive and traffic is slow. Rent only for day trips.
  • Forgetting Christmas Day closures. Book Christmas dinner ahead; plenty of places shut or run set menus.
  • Ignoring the final hotel price. US rates are usually shown before tax, and many Miami Beach hotels add a daily resort fee at checkout.
  • Expecting long beach afternoons. With sunset around 17:30, do the beach in the morning and early afternoon.

Compare December in Miami and Amsterdam

Side by side, the gap is about 18°C and three hours of daylight. Figures are rounded climate normals for 1991 to 2020 from NOAA (Miami) and KNMI (Amsterdam).

Book it, but pick your week

Go, and aim for the second week of December: Art Basel is over, the Dutch holiday hasn't started, and the weather is the same as at Christmas. If you're tied to school holidays, book flights and a hotel now and accept that you're paying the peak. Go during Art Basel only if the art is the reason for the trip.
