Miami in January: Weather, Events and Prices for 2027

8 min read

January is one of the best months to swap Amsterdam for Miami, as long as you book early and accept peak-season hotel prices. Miami's January afternoons average about 24 to 25°C with nights around 16°C, according to NOAA's National Weather Service climate normals for 1991 to 2020, while Amsterdam's January days average around 6°C, according to KNMI's 1991 to 2020 normals.

That gap is the whole point. You get dry, sunny, mostly mild weather, the Everglades at their best and a city that is fully switched on. What you don't get is a bargain, and it pays to know a few traps before you book.

What do people get wrong about Miami in January?

The biggest mistake is treating January as off-season. Miami's peak season runs roughly from December to April, when winter residents from the northern US and Canada (locally called snowbirds) arrive and hotel rates climb to their highest of the year.

The second mistake is packing only for the beach. Most January days are warm, but cold fronts sweep down from the north a few times a month and can drop the temperature into the low teens Celsius for a day or two, sometimes with a stiff wind. Locals will be in puffer jackets. You'll want at least a sweater and long trousers.

Third, the sea is pleasant rather than tropical. Atlantic water off Miami Beach sits around 22 to 24°C in January, according to NOAA's coastal water temperature guide. That's fine for a swim on a hot afternoon and bracing after a front has passed. If a long daily swim is your priority, March or April will suit you better.

A few calendar mix-ups catch people every year:

  • Art Basel Miami Beach is in December, not January. If you came for the art fairs, you've missed them.
  • The Miami Open tennis is in March, and the Miami International Boat Show is in February.
  • The Orange Bowl moves around. As part of the College Football Playoff rotation, it lands on different dates from season to season, sometimes late December, sometimes early January. Check orangebowl.org before you plan around it.

Finally, the paperwork. Dutch citizens fly to the US under the Visa Waiver Program, which lets eligible nationals visit for up to 90 days without a visa. You need an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), an online pre-travel authorisation from US Customs and Border Protection. CBP raised the ESTA fee in 2025, so check the current amount on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, and ignore the lookalike agencies that charge extra.

What are the real numbers for Miami in January?

Miami in January is warm, dry and sunny, with about 10.5 to 11 hours of daylight. Here's what the numbers look like and what they mean for your bags and your budget.

Weather and daylight

January is in the heart of South Florida's dry season. Miami International Airport averages roughly 45 mm of rain in January, according to NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals, and that usually falls as short showers rather than all-day washouts.

The sun rises a little after 7:00 and sets around 17:45 to 18:10 over the month, so you get about two and a half to three hours more daylight than in Amsterdam. Humidity is low by Miami standards, which is why January feels so comfortable for walking.

The UV is still strong enough to burn skin that has spent December under Dutch clouds. Pack sunscreen and a hat even though it doesn't feel like summer.

What to pack: shorts and T-shirts for most days, one pair of long trousers, a light sweater or fleece for evenings and cold fronts, a thin rain layer, swimwear, sunglasses and comfortable walking shoes. Bring something warm for indoors too: Miami restaurants, malls and cinemas run their air conditioning hard all year.

Events and holidays

Miami's January calendar mixes public holidays with a handful of festivals that come back every year. Dates for the festivals shift, so treat these as months, not appointments.

  • New Year's Day (1 January) is a federal holiday. South Beach and Brickell are packed for New Year's Eve and hotel prices spike that week.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday on the third Monday of January, which in 2027 falls on 18 January. Expect a long weekend crowd, a parade in Liberty City and some government offices closed.
  • Art Deco Weekend is a free street festival along Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, run by the Miami Design Preservation League, usually in mid-January. Check artdecoweekend.com for the 2027 dates.
  • The Miami Jewish Film Festival usually runs from January into February at venues across the city. Its website publishes the programme a few weeks ahead.

On the Dutch side, the kerstvakantie (the national Christmas school holiday) runs from the second half of December into the first days of January. Flights out of Schiphol fill up and get pricier during that window, and the return leg in the first weekend of January is often the tightest. Rijksoverheid publishes the exact school holiday dates for each school year on rijksoverheid.nl.

Hotels and flights

Hotel rates in Miami are at or near their annual high in January, especially in South Beach and over New Year's and the MLK Day weekend. Mid-January weekdays are usually the softest point of the month. Our hotel price guide for a first stay is a good place to compare areas before you commit.

For flights, KLM runs the nonstop between Schiphol and Miami International, and you can also connect through US hubs or other European airports. miamiamsterdam.com does not track fares on this route yet, so we can't give you a January price, and we'd rather leave that blank than guess. Our fare calendar will show the cheapest months and days once tracking starts. In the meantime, you can compare Amsterdam to Miami flights yourself, and if you can fly after the school holiday ends, do.

How do you plan a January trip to Miami, step by step?

Plan in this order: dates first, flights and hotel next, then the few January-only things that make the trip worth it.

  1. Pick dates that dodge the crunch. Avoid the Dutch kerstvakantie and New Year's week if you can. The sweet spot is roughly the second and third weeks of January, around (but not on) the MLK Day weekend.
  2. Get your ESTA early. Apply at least a few days before you fly. Approval is often fast, but not always.
  3. Book flights two to three months ahead for January, since peak season on the Miami end overlaps with winter-sun demand from Europe.
  4. Book the hotel at the same time. For walkable beaches and nightlife, hotels in South Beach are the obvious pick. Brickell suits people who want restaurants and a downtown base, while Coconut Grove and Coral Gables are quieter and leafier.
  5. Sort data before you land. A travel eSIM saves you from roaming charges outside the EU, and you can set up a US eSIM at home so it switches on at MIA.
  6. Use the jet lag. Miami is six hours behind Amsterdam in January. Most flights land in the afternoon, so stay up until about 21:00 local time and you'll wake early, which is perfect for the beach before the crowds.

What's genuinely best in January

The Everglades. This is our clear favourite. In the dry season, water levels drop and wildlife gathers at the remaining pools, so alligators, herons and anhingas are easy to spot, and the mosquitoes are far less brutal than in summer. Shark Valley and the Anhinga Trail are the classic stops, or you can book an Everglades airboat or guided tour if you don't want to drive.

Art Deco Weekend. Free, outdoors and right on Ocean Drive, it's the best way to understand why the pastel hotels of the Art Deco Historic District matter. Combine it with a walking tour of the district.

A day trip down the Keys. Clear January skies make the Overseas Highway at its most scenic. Key Largo is an easy day out; Key West is a long one, so start early or stay a night. You'll need wheels for this, so compare car hire in Miami a few weeks out.

Outdoor everything. January is the month to eat on terraces, walk the Wynwood Walls, cycle Key Biscayne or tour the gardens at Vizcaya without melting.

Skip: New Year's week in South Beach, unless the crowds are the point. You'll pay the highest room rates of the month for packed streets, and the rest of January is calmer, cheaper and has the same weather.

Is January a good month to visit Miami?

Yes. If you're escaping a Dutch winter, January is the most reliable warm, dry month Miami offers, and it's the best time of year for the Everglades and anything outdoors. Go in the middle of the month, book flights and hotels together two to three months ahead, pack a sweater for the cold fronts, and leave New Year's to the party crowd. If your budget is tight or swimming is the main event, wait for late April instead.
