Miami in July: Weather, Events and Whether to Go (2027)
Miami in July gives you daytime highs around 32°C, a sea close to 30°C and a thunderstorm most afternoons, while Miami in February gives you about 25°C, a cooler sea and very little rain. For most travellers from Amsterdam, February wins on comfort. July only makes sense if Dutch school holidays fix your dates, or if you want the warmest swimming and some of the lowest hotel rates of the year.
That isn't a reason to write July off. It's a different trip: early mornings in the water, afternoons indoors while the storm passes, and evenings that stay warm enough for shorts until midnight. Go in knowing that and you'll have a good time.
How does Miami in July compare with February and with Amsterdam?
Miami in July is roughly 7 to 10°C hotter than Amsterdam in July, about three times as wet, and humid enough that the feels-like temperature regularly passes 38°C. The table below uses rounded climate norms (long-term averages, not forecasts) from NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Miami and KNMI's normals for De Bilt, the reference station near Amsterdam.
| Month and place | Day high (°C) | Night low (°C) | Sea temperature (°C) | Rain in the month (mm) | Daylight (hours) | Hurricane risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Miami, July | 32 to 33 | 25 to 26 | 29 to 31 | 150 to 180 | about 13.5 | Low to moderate, season is open |
| Miami, February | 24 to 25 | 16 to 17 | 23 to 24 | about 50 | about 11 to 11.5 | None, outside the season |
| Amsterdam, July | 22 to 23 | 13 to 14 | 17 to 19 (North Sea) | 75 to 85 | about 16 | Not applicable |
The headline: July swaps February's dry, mild air for heat, humidity and rain, and gives you a sea that feels like a bath. If the February column looks more like your trip, our guide to Miami in February covers that month in detail.
What does July weather actually mean for your days?
July weather in Miami means you plan outdoor time for the morning and evening, and treat 14:00 to 18:00 as storm and siesta time. The heat itself is steady rather than extreme: highs barely move from day to day, and nights rarely drop below 25°C.
The rain is the part people misread. A July day in Miami usually starts bright, clouds build after lunch, and a short, loud thunderstorm drops a lot of water in 30 to 90 minutes before the sky clears again. Full washout days happen, but they're the exception. Lightning is the real hazard, so get off the beach when you hear thunder.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center, with the most active stretch from mid-August to mid-October. July is early in the season and direct hits on Miami that month are uncommon, but tropical storms do form. Watch the National Hurricane Center's outlook in the week before you fly.
Daylight helps. Sunrise is around 06:30 and sunset around 20:15 local time in July, so you get long, usable evenings. Miami runs on Eastern Daylight Time in summer, six hours behind Amsterdam.
What should you pack for Miami in July?
Pack for heat, sudden rain and freezing air conditioning, in that order. The short list:
- Loose linen or cotton, and more tops than you think, because you'll change mid-day
- A compact umbrella or a light rain shell (skip the heavy jacket)
- Sandals or trainers that can survive a soaked pavement
- A light jumper or long sleeves for restaurants, malls, cinemas and the plane, where air conditioning is set very low
- High-factor sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat: the UV index sits at the top of the scale on clear July middays
- A rash guard if you'll snorkel, since you'll float face down in strong sun
What's on in Miami in July 2027?
July in Miami is built around Independence Day, a few food and nature traditions, and a lot of summer sport. Independence Day (the Fourth of July) is the US federal holiday marking the 1776 Declaration of Independence. In 2027, 4 July falls on a Sunday, so the federal holiday is observed on Monday 5 July, according to the US Office of Personnel Management's holiday rules. Expect fireworks over Biscayne Bay downtown and on Miami Beach; the City of Miami and City of Miami Beach publish the programmes a few weeks ahead.
Florida's spiny lobster mini-season is a two-day recreational lobster season held on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). On that rule it should fall on 28 and 29 July 2027, but confirm on the FWC site. The Keys and the boat ramps get very busy.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables usually holds its mango festival in July, when South Florida mango season peaks. Dates move year to year, so check Fairchild's events page in spring. The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau has also run summer discount programmes such as Miami Spa Months from July into September; check its website for the 2027 line-up.
For sport, the Miami Marlins play Major League Baseball at loanDepot park through the summer, with air conditioning under a retractable roof, and Inter Miami's MLS season continues through July. Both publish schedules on their official sites.
Is July busy, and what happens to hotel prices?
July is low season for international visitors to Miami, so hotel rates are generally well below the December to April peak, especially on Miami Beach. It isn't empty: Florida families, domestic road-trippers and visitors from Latin America fill the beaches around the Fourth of July weekend. You can usually get a far better room in South Beach than you could afford in February, so it's a good month to compare hotels in South Beach against quieter areas.
For a sense of what a first stay costs across neighbourhoods, see our Miami hotel price guide. One honest gap: miamiamsterdam.com doesn't track fares on the Amsterdam to Miami route yet, so we have no July fare figure to give you. When tracking starts, July will show up on the fare calendar.
What's genuinely best in Miami in July, and what should you skip?
The best of Miami in July is anything on or in the water before noon. Our picks:
- A morning on Biscayne Bay. July seas are usually calm in the mornings, which is ideal for boat trips out to Stiltsville or snorkelling in Biscayne National Park. Browse boat trips and tours in Miami and pick a departure before 10:00.
- Mangoes at Fairchild. Even if you miss the festival, the garden's tropical fruit collection is at its best in July. Go when it opens and leave before the afternoon storm.
- A day trip to Key Largo. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is about an hour and a quarter south by car and the water is at its warmest. Car hire in Miami makes this easy; leave by 07:30 to beat the heat and traffic.
- Fourth of July fireworks. Watch from the Bayfront Park side downtown or from a Miami Beach balcony, and plan your route home before the causeways jam.
Skip: hiking in the Everglades. Summer is the wet season there, mosquitoes are at their worst, and the US National Park Service itself recommends the dry season for visiting. Save it for a winter trip.
How do you plan a July trip from Amsterdam, step by step?
Planning a July trip from Amsterdam comes down to locking dates early, sorting your ESTA and building your days around the weather.
- Check the Dutch summer school holiday dates. The Netherlands staggers its summer holidays by region (noord, midden and zuid), and together they cover early July to late August. Rijksoverheid.nl publishes the 2027 dates. Departures from Schiphol in the first weekend of each region's holiday are the most expensive.
- Book flights early. KLM flies nonstop between Amsterdam Schiphol and Miami, and one-stop routings run via US hubs such as Atlanta and New York, or via London and Paris. With no tracked fares from us yet, the practical move is to compare Amsterdam to Miami flights a few months ahead and avoid holiday start weekends.
- Apply for your ESTA. The ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is the online authorisation Dutch passport holders need for visits to the US of up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program. Apply only on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov; US Customs and Border Protection recommends applying at least 72 hours before travel. The fee was raised in 2025, so check the current amount there rather than trusting older articles.
- Buy travel insurance that covers hurricanes. Check that the policy covers trip disruption from named storms, and buy it before a storm is named, or that storm won't be covered.
- Choose a base with shade and a pool. South Beach for walkability, Coconut Grove or Coral Gables for trees and calm, Key Biscayne for beaches. In July, a pool and air conditioning matter more than a sea view.
- Sort data before you land. Rideshare apps, weather radar and storm alerts all need data. A travel eSIM for the US set up at home means you're connected as soon as you leave the plane at MIA.
What catches people out in Miami in July?
The most common mistake is planning big outdoor plans for the afternoon. Book walking tours, Wynwood street art and beach time for the morning, and keep museums like the Pérez Art Museum Miami or Frost Science for after lunch.
Street flooding is the second. Heavy storms, especially at high tide, flood low streets in parts of Miami Beach and Brickell within minutes. Never drive through standing water: it hides kerbs, potholes and saltwater that wrecks hire cars.
Sargassum, a brown seaweed that drifts in from the Atlantic, can pile up on beaches in summer. It varies by day and beach, and the bay-side beaches on Key Biscayne are often clearer than the Atlantic side.
Prices on menus and shelves exclude sales tax, which is added at the till, and restaurants expect a tip of around 20 percent on top. Budget for both, because together they add a noticeable slice to every meal.
If you plan to join the lobster mini-season, you'll need a Florida saltwater fishing licence with a spiny lobster permit, and size and bag limits apply, according to the FWC. Rangers do check.
Last, the cold. Going from 33°C outside to 20°C inside a restaurant several times a day is how people catch colds on summer trips. Carry that light layer.
So should you go to Miami in July?
Go in July if your dates are fixed by school holidays, if you want warm water and better hotel rooms for your money, and if you're happy to live by an early start and an afternoon break. If your dates are flexible and you want long, dry beach days, wait for winter: the February guide is the one to read instead. For July, book early, keep mornings for the water, and you'll get the best of a hot month.
