Miami in April 2027: Weather, Events and Prices from Amsterdam
Flying from Amsterdam to Miami in mid-April gets you warm, mostly dry beach weather after the spring break rush has gone. Flying in the last week of April puts you in the Dutch meivakantie, when half the Netherlands heads somewhere sunny at once. For most readers, the window from roughly 5 to 22 April 2027 wins: the same weather, fewer people, and hotels sliding out of high season.
April is one of Miami's best months, full stop. Winter crowds are thinning, the summer rains haven't started, and the sea is finally warm enough for a proper swim rather than a brave dip. Here's what the month actually looks like and how to plan it.
The April numbers
Miami in April averages daytime highs of about 28 to 29°C and night lows around 21°C, according to the US National Weather Service's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Miami International Airport. That's roughly 15 degrees warmer than a typical April afternoon in Amsterdam, which is the whole point of the trip.
Weather and daylight
The Atlantic off Miami Beach usually sits around 25 to 26°C in April, warm enough to stay in for an hour without noticing. Rain is modest: April is the end of the dry season, with roughly 75 to 90 mm across the whole month in the National Weather Service normals, mostly as short afternoon showers rather than grey days. The wet season proper starts in late May, and the Atlantic hurricane season doesn't begin until 1 June, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
Daylight runs to about 12.5 to 13 hours, with sunsets close to 8pm. Amusingly, Amsterdam's evenings are actually longer than Miami's by late April, something you only really notice from a Florida beach at 20:15 when it's already dark.
The sun is the thing to respect. Midday UV levels in South Florida in April regularly reach the very high range, and a pale Dutch shoulder can burn in 20 minutes. Amsterdam is six hours ahead of Miami throughout April, because the US switches to summer time on 14 March 2027 and the EU on 28 March 2027.
What's on
The big March events mostly clear out before April starts, which is a large part of April's appeal. Easter falls on 28 March in 2027, so the Easter weekend lands before April this year, and most US college spring breaks are also in March.
These recur every year, but check exact dates before you book:
- Miami Open (tennis): held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens over two weeks in late March, with finals usually in the last days of March or the first days of April. Dates are on the tournament's official site.
- Miami Beach Pride: usually held in April, with a parade along Ocean Drive. South Beach hotels fill up that weekend, so confirm the date on the official Miami Beach Pride site first.
- Baseball and basketball: the Miami Marlins' MLB season starts at loanDepot park in Little Havana around the start of April, and the Miami Heat finish their NBA regular season at the Kaseya Center in mid-April, with play-in and playoff games after that.
- Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix: usually early May at Hard Rock Stadium. If the race ever shifts into late April, hotel prices across the city jump; check formula1.com.
The US has no federal public holiday in April. On the Dutch side, King's Day (Koningsdag) falls on Tuesday 27 April 2027, and the meivakantie, the Dutch school May holiday, usually spans the last week of April into early May. The official 2027 dates are published on rijksoverheid.nl under schoolvakanties.
Prices and crowds
April is the tail end of Miami's high season, which runs roughly from December through April. Hotel rates are typically highest in the first days of the month and ease as May approaches, with weekends priced above midweek and event weekends such as Pride spiking on top of that.
On fares, we'll be straight: miamiamsterdam.com does not track Amsterdam to Miami fares yet, so there is no April figure from us and we won't invent one. When tracking starts, April will appear in our Amsterdam and Miami fare calendar. Until then, the practical rule is that Schiphol departures during the meivakantie tend to cost more than mid-April ones, so compare a few dates when you search flights from Amsterdam to Miami.
A nonstop between Schiphol and MIA takes around ten hours westbound. KLM has flown the route nonstop, but transatlantic schedules shift by season, so check that a nonstop runs on your dates; otherwise you'll connect through a hub such as Atlanta, New York, London or Paris.
The one fixed cost is the ESTA. ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is the online pre-approval that Dutch passport holders need to visit the US without a visa for up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program. The ESTA fee is USD 40 per person, according to US Customs and Border Protection, 2025, and an approved ESTA is valid for two years or until your passport expires.
The April game plan
The best April trip from Amsterdam is booked in this order: dates, ESTA, flights, a base, then the days themselves.
- Pick mid-April dates. Aim for roughly 5 to 22 April 2027, after the Miami Open and before the meivakantie. Check the Pride weekend if you want South Beach quiet (or, equally, if you want to be in the middle of it).
- Apply for your ESTA. Use only the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, and apply when you book rather than three days before. US Customs and Border Protection recommends applying at least 72 hours before travel.
- Book flights. Compare a nonstop against one-stop options; the stop can save money but adds three to five hours.
- Choose a base. South Beach is walkable and loud, Mid-Beach is calmer with the same sand, Brickell suits a high-rise city break, and Coconut Grove is leafy, slower and close to Key Biscayne's beaches. Our pick for April is the Grove, so start with hotels in Coconut Grove and work outwards.
- Pack for heat and air con. Light cotton or linen, swimwear, sandals, a wide-brimmed hat, SPF 50 and a compact umbrella for afternoon showers. Bring one warm layer too, because Miami's restaurants, cinemas and buses run the air conditioning at refrigerator settings.
- Sort data and money. Set up an eSIM before you leave so you have maps and ride-hailing the moment you land; an Airalo eSIM for the US installs in a few minutes at Schiphol. If you're saving up for the trip in euros, bunq's Savings Account pays a 1.51% a year base rate and Rabobank's Rabo SpaarRekening 1.50% on the first EUR 10k, according to the miamiamsterdam.com savings rate tracker, October 2026; compare the rest on our savings rates and cost of living page.
What's genuinely best in April
Swim at Key Biscayne. Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park have calmer water and far fewer people than South Beach, and April is when the sea finally gets comfortable.
Go to the Everglades before the wet season. Late dry season concentrates alligators and wading birds around the remaining water, and mosquitoes are far milder than in summer. Shark Valley's tram road is the easy option, or book a guided Everglades tour if you'd rather not drive.
Catch a Marlins night game. loanDepot park has a retractable roof, tickets are rarely hard to get early in the season, and it gets you into Little Havana for dinner afterwards.
Drive the Overseas Highway. April's dry, clear days are ideal for a day trip to Key Largo or Islamorada, and further if you're willing to start early. Rent for one or two days only, rather than the whole stay, and compare car hire in Miami for just those dates.
Skip the Ocean Drive sidewalk cafés. Oversized cocktails, inflated prices and a service charge already on the bill. Walk two blocks inland and you'll eat better for less.
The usual mistakes
Most April trips go wrong on bills and dates, not weather.
- Tipping twice. Many Miami Beach restaurants add an automatic service charge, often around 18%, to the bill. Read it before you add a tip on the card machine.
- Ignoring resort fees. Plenty of Miami Beach hotels add a daily resort or destination fee at checkout. Compare the total price, not the nightly rate.
- Rental car tolls. Most Miami expressways use cashless tolling, and rental companies charge a daily fee for their toll programme on top of the tolls. Ask at the desk before you drive off.
- Paying in euros. When a card terminal offers to charge you in EUR, decline and pay in USD. The dynamic currency conversion rate is almost always worse than your bank's.
- Unofficial ESTA sites. Lookalike websites charge several times the official fee. Apply only at esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
- Assuming every beach looks like the brochure. Sargassum, a brown floating seaweed, can wash up on South Florida beaches from spring onwards. Check local beach reports and switch beaches if one is covered.
- Defaulting to the May holiday. Booking the meivakantie because the kids are off is fine, but if you're not tied to school dates, you pay more to sit in a busier plane.
The months compared
April sits between a crowded, event-heavy March and a hot, increasingly wet May. Climate figures below are approximate, based on US National Weather Service 1991 to 2020 normals for Miami International Airport; sea temperatures are typical ranges.
| March | April | May | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical high (°C) | about 27 | about 28 to 29 | about 30 to 31 |
| Typical low (°C) | about 19 | about 21 | about 23 to 24 |
| Sea temperature (°C) | about 24 | about 25 to 26 | about 27 |
| Rain (mm, whole month) | about 60 to 75 | about 75 to 90 | about 150 |
| Season | Peak | Tail of high season | Shoulder, wet season begins late May |
| Big draws | Spring break, Miami Open, Ultra | Pride, baseball, Heat playoffs | F1 Miami Grand Prix |

The verdict
Go in April, and go between about 5 and 22 April 2027. You get the warmest swimmable sea of the dry season, very little rain and hotel prices on their way down, without the March events or the meivakantie surcharge. Base yourself in Coconut Grove or Mid-Beach, keep one day for the Everglades and one for the Keys, and leave Ocean Drive's cafés to everyone else.
