Miami in May: Weather, Events and Whether to Go in 2027

7 min read

You're in Amsterdam, weighing up a Miami trip for May 2027. May is one of the better months to go: days typically reach 29 to 31°C, the Atlantic sits around 27°C, the winter crowds have gone home, and the rainy season usually only gets going in the second half of the month.

The catch is that May is a month of two halves. Aim for the first two weeks if you want beach weather with fewer afternoon storms. Also keep an eye on two weekends that push hotel rates up: the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix and Memorial Day.

May side by side

Miami in May is roughly 12 to 14°C warmer than Amsterdam by day and far more humid, based on long-term climate normals from NOAA (Miami) and KNMI (De Bilt). The ranges below are typical values from those normals, not a forecast for 2027.

Daytime high (°C)29 to 3116 to 19
Night low (°C)22 to 247 to 10
Sea temperature (°C)26 to 28 (Miami Beach)10 to 13 (Zandvoort)

Two things the table can't show. First, humidity: Miami's dew points climb through May, so 30°C often feels like the mid-30s once you step away from the sea breeze. Second, the shape of the rain. In Miami it arrives as short, loud afternoon thunderstorms, usually over in an hour, not the all-day Dutch drizzle you're used to.

The National Weather Service office in Miami usually marks the start of South Florida's wet season around mid-May. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center, so May falls just before it. Early named storms do occasionally form in May, but they're the exception.

Heat, crowds and events

May is shoulder season in Miami: the winter high season, roughly December to April, is over, and the hot, wet low season hasn't fully arrived. That usually means easier restaurant bookings, emptier weekday beaches and hotel rates that ease off from their winter levels.

The exceptions are specific weekends, not the whole month. A Miami Beach hotel that looks reasonable on a Tuesday can double on a Formula 1 or Memorial Day weekend, so check which weekend you're landing on before you fall for a rate. For a first stay outside South Beach, the shady streets of Coconut Grove are calmer and work well for families, and you can compare hotels in Coconut Grove against the beach side. Our hotel price overview covers what a first stay typically involves.

On flights, miamiamsterdam.com doesn't track fares on the Amsterdam to Miami route yet, so we have no May figure to give you. Once tracking starts, the fare calendar with the cheapest month to fly will show how May compares. KLM flies nonstop between Schiphol and Miami International, and one-stop routings through other European or US hubs are the usual cheaper alternative.

What's on in May

  • Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. The race has been held every May since 2022 at the Miami International Autodrome, a temporary circuit around Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Exact dates move each year, so confirm the 2027 weekend on formula1.com before booking anything. Hotel prices across the city jump that weekend.
  • Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a US federal holiday on the last Monday of May, which is 31 May 2027. The long weekend fills the beaches, and Miami Beach has in recent years added parking and traffic restrictions around it.
  • Haitian Heritage Month. May is Haitian Heritage Month, marked with music, food and cultural events in Little Haiti. The programme changes yearly, so check local listings closer to the time.
  • Mother's Day. US Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday of May (9 May 2027), and brunch spots book out.

On the Dutch side, meivakantie (the spring school holiday) runs from late April into early May, and the official dates per region are published by Rijksoverheid. Bevrijdingsdag (Liberation Day) is 5 May, Hemelvaartsdag (Ascension Day) falls on 6 May 2027 and Pinksteren (Whitsun) on 16 and 17 May 2027. Those long weekends push up demand from Schiphol, so book early or fly midweek around them.

What to pack

Pack for heat, sun and sudden rain: linen or cotton, a hat, sandals, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen and a small foldable umbrella. Add one light layer, because Miami air conditioning is set to arctic in malls, museums and restaurants. Leave the jeans at home.

The best of May, and one thing to skip

  1. Swim early. The water is warm enough to stay in for an hour, and South Pointe Park or Lummus Park before 10:00 gives you calm sea and soft light before the sun turns brutal.
  2. See the Everglades while it's still dry. May is the tail end of the Everglades dry season, when wildlife gathers around the remaining water, and the Anhinga Trail near the Royal Palm visitor centre is the classic spot for alligators and wading birds. Go in the morning, or book one of the Everglades and airboat tours that pick up in the city.
  3. Drive south. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne is a short hop, and the Florida Keys make a long but rewarding day trip.
  4. Do evenings in town. Wynwood's murals and bars and Calle Ocho in Little Havana are at their best after sunset, when the heat breaks.

Skip South Beach on Memorial Day weekend unless crowds, traffic and police checkpoints are the point. Go to Key Biscayne or stay in Coconut Grove instead.

The booking sequence

Planning Miami in May from Amsterdam takes six steps, and the order matters because two of them have deadlines.

  1. Pick your dates around the spikes. Check the F1 weekend on formula1.com and the meivakantie dates on Rijksoverheid, then aim for the first half of May, outside both.
  2. Apply for your ESTA. The ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is the online pre-approval Dutch citizens need to visit the US under the Visa Waiver Program, and it's valid for two years. Apply only on the official US Customs and Border Protection site, and check the current fee there, because it changed in 2025.
  3. Book flights. Compare nonstop KLM against one-stop options and search flights from Amsterdam to Miami for midweek departures, which usually beat Friday and Sunday.
  4. Choose your base. South Beach for walkability and nightlife, Mid-Beach for quieter sand, Coconut Grove or Brickell if you'd rather sleep on the mainland.
  5. Sort data and transport. Set up a travel eSIM for data on arrival before you leave so you can order a ride from MIA straight away. Miami is spread out, so decide now whether you'll want a car for day trips.
  6. Pack and print. Bring your passport, ESTA confirmation, hotel address and a credit card that works for US deposits.

May mistakes

The most common May mistake is assuming the whole month is dry. The first week and the last week can feel like different seasons, so if beach days are the priority, front-load them and keep museum plans for stormy late-May afternoons.

The second is underestimating the sun. The UV index in Miami regularly reaches extreme levels in May, according to the National Weather Service, and Dutch skin that handled a sunny Vondelpark afternoon will burn in 20 minutes on the beach.

Watch the price you see versus the price you pay. Many Miami Beach hotels add a nightly resort fee, and US sales and local taxes come on top of the headline rate, so compare totals. Tipping 18 to 20 percent in restaurants is standard.

Sargassum is an edge case people don't expect. This brown seaweed drifts in from the Caribbean from spring onwards and can pile up on Miami Beach in some years. Beaches facing Biscayne Bay and Key Biscayne are less exposed.

Finally, don't book a car-free stay and then decide you want the Keys. Car hire is easiest to arrange in advance, and you can compare car hire at Miami airport before you fly.

The verdict

Go in the first half of May, avoid the F1 and Memorial Day weekends, and you get hot, swimmable Miami at shoulder season prices with room on the beach. If you'd rather trade warm water for drier, milder days, read our guide to Miami in November instead. For a classic beach break from a grey Dutch spring, May is a yes.
