Miami in March 2027: Weather, Events and Is It Worth It

8 min read

Miami in March averages daytime highs of about 27°C (80°F) and night-time lows around 18 to 19°C, according to NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Miami International Airport. That makes March one of the best-weather months to fly over from Amsterdam, but it's also peak season, so you pay for the sunshine with higher hotel rates and bigger crowds, especially on the Ultra Music Festival weekend and over Easter, which falls on 28 March 2027.

Short version: go, book early, and plan your dates around three fixed points in the calendar. The rest of this guide tells you which ones, and what to do once you land.

How does Miami in March compare with Amsterdam?

Miami in March is roughly 17°C warmer than Amsterdam by day, with a sea you can actually swim in and about the same amount of rain. Here's the side by side, using long-term climate norms rather than any single year.

March, typicalMiami (MIA)Amsterdam (AMS)
Daytime high (°C / °F)26 to 28 / 79 to 829 to 11 / 48 to 52
Night low (°C / °F)17 to 19 / 63 to 662 to 4 / 36 to 39
Sea temperature (°C)24 to 25 (Atlantic)6 to 7 (North Sea)
Rainfall (mm per month)60 to 7550 to 65
Daylight (hours)about 11.7 rising to 12.3about 10.9 rising to 12.8
Clock difference (hours)Amsterdam 6 ahead, 5 ahead from 14 to 27 March 2027

The Miami figures are rounded from NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals and the Amsterdam figures from KNMI's 1991 to 2020 normals for De Bilt; sea temperatures are typical ranges, not readings. One honest note: miamiamsterdam.com doesn't track fares or living costs for this route yet, so there are no site prices in this table on purpose.

What does March weather and peak season mean for your trip?

March weather in Miami means dry, warm days, cooler evenings and a strong sun, which is close to ideal if you're escaping a Dutch March. Rain tends to arrive as short showers rather than all-day grey, and humidity is far lower than in summer.

Pack for a Mediterranean summer with a twist: shorts, linen, swimwear, sandals, a hat and high-factor sunscreen, plus one light jumper. That jumper is for two things: the occasional cold front that drops nights to the low teens, and American air conditioning, which turns every restaurant and cinema into a fridge.

The flip side is the crowd. March sits inside Miami's dry season (roughly December to April), US college spring break runs through most of the month, and two big events land in the second half. Hotel rates are at the top of Miami's year, and the cheap rooms in South Beach and Brickell go first. Our hotel guide for a first stay in Miami is the place to start comparing areas.

What's on in Miami in March?

The Ultra Music Festival is a three-day electronic music festival at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami, usually held on a weekend in late March alongside the wider Miami Music Week. Exact 2027 dates are set by the organiser, so check the official Ultra site before you book anything downtown.

The Miami Open is a combined ATP and WTA tennis tournament at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, typically running from mid-March into early April. If you like tennis, the early rounds are the sweet spot: cheaper tickets and outside courts where you sit a few metres from top players.

Calle Ocho Music Festival, the street party at the heart of Carnaval Miami, takes over SW 8th Street in Little Havana on a Sunday in March. It's run by the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, and the date shifts each year, so check their announcement.

There are no US federal public holidays in March. On the Dutch side, Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027 and Easter Monday (Tweede Paasdag) is a public holiday in the Netherlands, so the last weekend of March is a popular getaway. The Dutch spring school holiday (voorjaarsvakantie) is set by region, usually in mid to late February, and the official dates are published on rijksoverheid.nl.

The best things to do in March, and one to skip

The Everglades are our clear favourite. March is dry season there, so wildlife gathers around the remaining water and the mosquitoes are bearable; the Anhinga Trail and Shark Valley are the classic spots for alligators and wading birds. If you don't want to drive it yourself, book an Everglades or airboat tour from Miami and let someone else handle the logistics.

Swim somewhere calmer than South Beach. Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne have warm water, fewer people and a lighthouse thrown in.

Catch Calle Ocho if your dates line up. It's loud, free to walk in, and the best excuse to eat your way through Little Havana in one afternoon.

Drive to the Keys for a day. March light and clear water make the Overseas Highway worth the hours, and renting a car in Miami is the only practical way to stop where you like, from Key Largo to Islamorada.

Skip Ocean Drive on spring break weekends. It's crowded, expensive, and the City of Miami Beach has in recent years brought in curfews, parking restrictions and extra checks in South Beach during March. Go midweek or not at all.

How should you plan a March trip to Miami from Amsterdam?

Planning a March trip from Amsterdam comes down to five steps, and the first two should happen this winter, not in February.

  1. Pick dates around the fixed points. Decide whether you want Ultra, the Miami Open or Calle Ocho, or whether you'd rather avoid them. Then avoid Easter weekend (26 to 29 March 2027) if you're flexible, because Dutch demand pushes fares up. Fares for March aren't tracked by miamiamsterdam.com yet, so watch our Amsterdam to Miami fare calendar as data comes in, and meanwhile compare Amsterdam to Miami flights for your exact days. KLM flies nonstop from Schiphol; one-stop options via US or European hubs are often cheaper.

  2. Apply for your ESTA. The ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is the online pre-approval Dutch passport holders need to visit the US for up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program. Apply only on the official US Customs and Border Protection site, at least 72 hours before departure as CBP advises. The fee was raised in 2025, so check the current amount there and ignore look-alike sites that charge extra.

  3. Book your hotel early and pick the area deliberately. South Beach suits beach-first trips, Brickell suits Ultra and the city, and Coconut Grove is the quiet, leafy option when downtown is packed. If you want calm during festival weekends, look at hotels in Coconut Grove, which sit a short ride from both downtown and Key Biscayne.

  4. Buy event tickets as soon as dates are confirmed. Ultra sells in phases with rising prices, and Miami Open session tickets for the later rounds go quickly.

  5. Sort data and payment before you fly. A US eSIM saves you hunting for a shop at MIA, so set one up at home: a travel eSIM for the US installs in a few minutes and works the moment you land. Bring a credit card as well as your Dutch debit card, because hotels and car hire firms usually want a credit card for the deposit.

What catches people out in Miami in March?

The most common surprises in Miami in March are about time, money and sun rather than the weather itself.

The clock moves twice. The US switches to daylight saving time on 14 March 2027 and the Netherlands on 28 March 2027. For those two weeks Amsterdam is 5 hours ahead instead of 6, which trips up video calls, check-in reminders and anyone booking a connecting train at Schiphol.

Hotel prices aren't the final price. Many Miami Beach hotels add a nightly resort or destination fee plus tax on top of the headline rate. Check the total at checkout, not the number on the search page.

Restaurant bills can include service already. Some Miami Beach restaurants add an automatic service charge; read the bill before tipping on top.

The sun is stronger than it feels. A breezy 27°C day in March still means a high UV index at Miami's latitude, and Dutch skin fresh out of winter burns fast. Reapply sunscreen and keep beach sessions to mornings and late afternoons.

Festival weekends change the city. During Ultra, roads around Bayfront Park close and downtown hotels hit their peak. If you're not going, stay elsewhere that weekend.

Rental car tolls add up. Most Miami highways are cashless toll roads, and rental firms charge a daily fee for their toll programme on top of the tolls. Ask at the desk what it costs before you drive off.

It's not hurricane season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to the US National Hurricane Center, so March is not a storm risk month.

So is March a good month to visit Miami?

Yes, if you book early and choose your weekend. March gives you reliable warmth, a swimmable sea and dry trails in the Everglades, which is about as good as Miami weather gets for someone coming from a Dutch spring. Go in the first half of the month for lower crowds and the 6-hour clock gap you're used to, or pick Ultra or the Miami Open weekend on purpose and accept the price. The only March plan we'd actively advise against is a last-minute South Beach stay over Easter.
